Alex Clare Dishes On Adele’s Compliments, Turning Down Beyonce For Alex Clare, turning down Beyonce may be one of the best decisions of his life.
Before releasing his album, The Lateness of the Hour, the British caterer-turned-musician was approached by the hip-hop singer’s team for one of his tracks.
While he turned the singer down — in what he calls an “idiot” move — the gamble paid off with Clare’s album going on to gain international success, thanks in part to his second single “Too Close” featuring in Microsoft’s advertisement campaign and peaking at number four on the UK Singles Chart.
Celebuzz recently caught up with Clare, 26, to chat about how he’s handling success, and the praises he’s receiving from music icons like Adele.
How did you react when you heard that Beyonce was interested in your music?
It’s a big compliment. I mean, if you write music, it’s not much different if say the public likes the music. The fact that anyone likes your music if you’re a musician is a compliment.
Beyonce’s team wanted your song, “Relax My Beloved,” on her record. Tell us how it all went down.
I wrote it. I wrote the song in its entirety and, like an idiot, I should’ve probably just said, “Yeah. Go on, Beyonce, you can have it.” But I think if you write a song and you have a strong attachment to it, it’s kind of hard to give it up.
Would you ever write a song for Beyonce then?
Hell yeah! She’s an ultimate pop star. I will gladly go and write a song for her if she wanted another song. I will do that in a heartbeat.
Adele is a pretty big fan. How do you feel about the attention that you’re getting from these music icons?
It’s okay. It’s fine. People are just people you know. And people like music. I wouldn’t see the difference. Music is universal and doesn’t really discriminate. Anyone has the right to enjoy it.

You actually went to catering school before going into music.
I did. I studied cooking and then I left school. I left school at sixteen and then went to catering school and studied that for a few years.
Why music?
I think it should probably go the other way around. Music is very much a part of me and I was still playing in a band and writing music back then, but it takes a while to make any living out of making music.
Now, you’ve worked with big names like Diplo and Switch. Tell us a little bit about what the recording and writing process was like.
It’s basically working with two very talented kids with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) – that’s basically how the whole process works. You have to lock them in a room and say, “Alright, now sit down, shut up and let’s make a song.” Then you actually make a song and it kind of works. I wrote probably 90 percent of the album before I met them. We shot around our ideas and then put the album together.
Do you think that you will ever collaborate with Diplo and Switch again?
I think it’s certainly a possibility.
What’s next for Alex Clare?
Working for the next six months. Then, we’ll start recording, and hopefully start recording album number two by the end of the year.
Is there anyone you have in mind you’d like to work with for the next album?
I have two people in mind, but I think I need to do a lot more writing before I really go into really serious production. Any names that are mentioned will have to be between me and them. I don’t want to look silly.
